The New Shelburne Road
The reconstructed Shelburne Road will be a landscaped four-lane boulevard, with a planted median island, bike lanes, sidewalks, bus stops and shelters, street lighting and a coordinated signal system. These features have the ability to reduce congestion and improve mobility while providing for the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians. The following is a rendering of what Shelburne Road is expected to look like once construction is complete:

The Landscaped Median and U-turns
The new planted median that divides Route 7 in Shelburne and South Burlington enhances motorist safety and facilitates traffic flow. So how do motorists change direction on the highway now? Well, here's a basic guide:

How to go left when departing a driveway or parking lot along Route 7
If you are departing a driveway or parking area along Route 7, you cannot immediately make a left turn. A left turn would put you on the wrong side of the median traveling against traffic. Instead, turn right and go with the traffic flow until you reach the first U-turn opportunity. Move into the marked U-turn lane at the far left-hand side of the road. When the left turn arrow appears on the traffic signal, proceed to make your U-turn to travel in the opposite direction on Route 7. If you are at an unsignalized break in the median, you may proceed to make your U-turn only when there is a reasonable break in oncoming traffic.

How to change direction on Route 7 using the jughandles
All motorists, but particularly those who are driving larger trucks or towing large equipment, can change direction on Route 7 by using the jughandles located at IDX Drive and across from Webster Road. To use a jughandle to change direction, simply move into the marked jughandle lane at the far right-hand side of the highway. After passing through the jughandle curve, you will arrive at a signalized intersection.
